Beautiful County Galway
Below is my list in no particular order of the most beautiful tourist attractions in county Galway
1. Lough Inagh valley Turf cutting in the beautiful Lough Inagh valley in Connemara near Recess- the Twelve Pins mountain range is in the background
2. Dunguaire Castle This beautiful castle located in the picturesque village of Kinvara, county Galway was constructed in 1520 on the site of a much older stronghold.
3. Kilmacduagh Round Tower This historic monastic site was established in the 7th centry by Saint Colman. The monastery contains a round tower, notable as both fine example of this particularly Irish feature but also because of its noticeable lean, over half a metre from the vertical. The tower is over 30 metres tall, with the only doorway some 7 metres above ground level. This site was of such importance that it became the centre of a new diocese, the Diocese of Kilmacduagh, in the 12th century. It is located near Gort
4. Yeats Tower Thoor Ballylee Castle (also known as Yeats tower) near Gort county Galway was W.B Yeats’s home from 1919-1929. It satisified his desire for a rooted place in a known countryside, not far from Coole Park and his life-long friend Lady Gregory. The castle was built in the 16th century bu the de Burgo family. After the Yeats family moved out in 1929 it fell into disuse , but was restored as ‘Yeats Tower’ in 1965 and fitted out as a Yeats museum, containing an interesting collection of first editions as well as items of furniture
5. Kylemore Abbey Originally called Kylemore Castle, this magnificent abbey was built between 1863 and 1868 as a private home for the family of Mitchell Henry, a wealthy politician from Manchester, England who served as MP for Galway County from 1871 to 1885. The abbey grounds also contain a neo-Gothic church (constructed between 1877 and 1881), a miniature replica of Norwich Cathedral, made from local green Connemara marble, and a Victorian walled garden. The abbey now serves as a girls secondary boarding school. The abbey and grounds are open to the public
6. Galway Cathedral Located in the heart of Galway city this magnificent Cathedral was constructed between 1958-1965 on the site of the old city jail
7. Coole Park Setting spring sun shinning through trees in Coole Park
8. Connemara sunrise Sunrise in Connemara near Renvyle
